Obituary of Lyle Sokoll

Lyle G. Sokoll, 90, lifelong Windham resident, passed away January 4, 2018. He was born in Lexington, a son of the late Michael and Louise Truesdell Sokoll. A Windham High School graduate, Lyle served in the US Navy during WWII. He married Margaret Austin September 14, 1946.

Over the years Lyle owned and operated Sokoll's Garage & Sons (Ford agency and wrecker service), a taxi and limo service, a Texaco Gas Station and was the original owner of the Old Coach Inn, all of Windham. He also sponsored Pump, Pass & Kick through Ford. Lyle owned dirt track racecars and had 1957 and 1958 Fords that raced on the old beach track in Daytona.

Lyle belonged to the Teamsters, Catskill Elks Lodge, American Legion in Florida and New York, Windham Bowling League, Nescot Assoc. (old time stock car club). He served as Commissioner of the Windham Fire Department.

Husband of 71 years to Margaret Sokoll, father of Melinda Sokoll of Windham and the late Lynn Sokoll who died in 2014; brother of the late Amelia Baker and Mary Becker; grandfather of Macee Lynn Soule and the late Austin Dana Sokoll; uncle of Donna Falker, Barbara Bois, Mike Becker and the late Reggie Becker.

Windham- Margaret and Lyle G. Sokoll services will be held together.

Margaret M. Sokoll, 91, and Lyle G. Sokoll, 90, both lifelong residence of Windham. Married as high school sweethearts, September 14, 1946. This year would have been their 72nd wedding anniversary. They had two children, Melinda M. Sokoll of Windham and the late Lynn Sokoll who passed in 2014. Lyle was a brother of the late Amelia Baker and Mary Becker. Grandparents of Macie Lynn Soule and the late Austin Dana Sokoll. Uncle and Aunt to Donna Falke, Barbara DuBois, Mike Becker and the late Reggie Baker.

They owned many businesses in Windham; Sokoll’s Garage, Margaret’s Beauty Mart, which Margaret ran for 36 years, Texaco Station and the original Old Coach Inn, all on Main Street, Windham.

Margaret was well known for all of her contributions to the various organizations she belonged to. They were the W. A. J. Alumni, Windham Historical Society, DAR, Democratic State Chairperson (invited and attended President Lyndon B. Johnson’s inauguration), President of Delaware/Greene Bowling League, Cub Scout Leader, Windham Ladies Auxiliary and a postcard collector.

Lyle served in the US Navy, was a member of the  American Legion in Florida and New York, Teamsters Union, Catskill’s Elks Club, Noscot (stock car club) and the Windham Fire Department.

He loved his wreckers and stock cars. He owned a car 400, which raced on the old Daytona Beach in the 1950’s. He sponsored punt, pass and kick for WAJ that was put on by Ford Motor Company.

They will be missed dearly…love you Mom and Pop, but let your new party begin.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018 from 11am-12noon at Decker Funeral Home, 5312 Main Street, Windham. A service to follow at 12noon. Interment at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Ashland, NY.
