Obituary of Donald Leroy Irwin
Senior Master Sergeant, Donald Leroy Irwin 87, of Prattsville, New York, passed away peacefully surrounded by family members Monday February, 18th 2019 at Albany Memorial Hospital in Albany, NY.
Funeral service and closed casket visitation will be held at Decker Funeral Home in Windham, NY on Thursday February, 21st between 4:00-7:00pm with John Gulino officiating. Burial will follow at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on Friday February, 22nd at 1:00pm. Decker Funeral Home will be handling the funeral arrangements.
Donald was born in Pepacton, NY to Alva Irwin and Lillian Howe-Irwin on April, 5th 1931. He received his GED while in the Service of the Military and an honorary diploma from Hunter Tannersville High School for his many years of Military Service.
A Veteran of 23 years, serving in Vietnam and Korea, Donald enlisted and served in the United States Army, and Airforce and retired as Senior Master Sergeant, E8. He also served as a Recruiter in Oneonta, NY for the last 3 years of his service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1327 in Prattsville, NY and the VFW Post 1545 in Windham, NY.
Donald was a very hard worker, and worked at his family owned business, Bearpen Construction, as well as holding positions at Stewarts, Thorpe GMC and Windham Golf Course just to name a few.
Hobbies included but are not limited to playing the guitar for the Del-Se-Nango Olde Tyme Fiddlers, Hilton Kelly and his Sidekicks, as well as playing with family and friends and many other gigs in his lifetime. He enjoyed Leather Crafting, Inventing, Fly Fishing, Hunting, Bird watching and Tinkering.
Donald is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Eva May Truesdell-Irwin, his children Jane Bemis, Balston Spa, NY, Laurel Irwin (James Huggins), West Kill, NY, Tammy Shea (John Shea) of Harrisburg, PA and David Irwin (Dorothy Macken) Gilboa, NY, including 16 grandchildren and their significant others, 19 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and his brother in-law David Truesdell.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made in honor of Donald to the American Legion Post 1327 in Prattsville, NY, or to the VFW Post 1545 in Windham, NY. But feel free to donate to the charity of your choice.
